Movie Review: MI3

Not withstanding Tom Cruise's bizarre antics and Andrew Sullivan's proposed boycott of the film, I decided to go see MI3 recently. Personally, I'ved always been of the school of thought that regardless of your behavior (within reason), it's the bottom line that matters and the bottom line here is that Cruise delivers. Sure, if one wanted to criticize one could mention how little chemistry there is between him and his on screen love interest played by the talented Michelle Monaghan (or off screen love interest for that matter, ha ha) or how absurdly the movie deviates from reality. But that would be missing the point. Just like the eccentric actors's opinions and beliefs shouldn't impact the evaluation of this movie, judgement calls about the reality of this movie or of certain on screen relationships don't matter. This movie is supposed to be a fun distraction from lifefor an hour or two and insofar as it attempts this objective it is wildly successful.

Indians, Muslims, Albinos, Oh My!

Personally, I am not offended in the slightest by the Da Vinc Codei, having read the book and followed the whole controversy closely. Frankly, I am dubious of anyone whose faith is so easily shaken by pop culture and/or who is so offended by some historical speculation. The movie itself seems to be garnering a lackluster reaction from audiences including Cannes. Meanwhile as the controversy spreads it seems to be impacting everyone from the Indian government, to Muslims to even, yes, albinos groups, I didn't know there were albino groups! Consider this:

Michael McGowan, an albino who heads the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, said "The Da Vinci Code" will be the 68th movie since 1960 to feature an evil albino.

"Silas is just the latest in a long string," McGowan said. "The problem is there has been no balance. There are no realistic, sympathetic or heroic characters with albinism that you can find in movies or popular culture."

Fair enough, I suppose, I'm just not sure that this has produced any significant bad feelings towards albinos. Btw, how much longer before the word "albino" becomes politically incorrect? Shouldn't it be "pigmentally challenged" or something?

My only sin;

The Bear the Monkey and the Media

To give you an idea of the kind of world we live in media wise, understand that: A bear killing a monkey in a zoo is a story whereas 400,000 people and counting being killed in Darfur is hardly discussd at any length anywhere. A third Duke kid being indicted is everywhere but the fact that the DNA failed to link any of them for the second time to the crime is relatively not reported. This sad, but widely understood, truth about the media would be much more depressing if we didn't have the incredible access to information that we now do. But, we, all of us, have a responsibility to stay informed. Just as we should eat well and maintain our health, we ought to remain informed about what's going on in the world. But this can't just mean checking Drudge or CNN everyday, it requires us to seek out the truth, because like they used to say on the X-Files, the truth is, in fact, out there but it's rarely presented well by most in a competitive industry in which sensationalism sells better than the truth.

All I want is the truth,
Just gimme some truth,

To be placed firmly in the "no shit?" department a new poll says Clinton outperformed Bush. In other news, the sun is hot. . .

Albert Einstein - "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

|
Laura Bush doesn't believe the polls and we don't don't believe you Laura. Or your husband. Nor do we believe in you. Or your husband. It won't be long now before this long national nightmare is over.

If you voted for or supported Bush you should be ashamed of yourself. You've hurt this wonderful country of ours. The only thing sadder, I think than that the fact that so many people were so wrong is that some still don't even admit how wrong they are/were. It's the height of idiocy, hypocrisy and arrogance. . . Pathetic. . .

How does it feel?,

Vedder: I Gots to Quit

Apparently Eddie Vedder is desperate to quit smoking. Strangely for a reputedly heavy smoker his voice, as of this Friday in Albany, anyway, sounds hardly any worse for the wear. . .

If you haven't heard of this yet, it's totally worth checking out, apparently this recently discovered Brazilian Stonehenge may betray the existence of an advanced culture in the Americas over 200 years ago. Fascinating.

Meeting Mike

My friend Flea Bob who, along with Nesharatu was present at my MJ encounter points out to me that I may have misreported the story: MJ asked me if I played lacrosse and then we high fived.

In the interest of accuracy I thought I'd post that.

Forever Young

Neil Young's new album is outstanding. If there is anything wrong with it, it's who is he trying persuade. The jig is over for the Bush and his cronies, it's no longer a question, the only people who actually defend Bush are the downright evil and disingenous and, of course, the simply braindead. Anyway, without further ado here are the lyrics from his new song, “Let’s Impeach the President”:

Let’s impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door
He’s the man who hired all the criminals

The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war
Let’s impeach the president for spying

On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones
What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees

Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government’s protection
Or was someone just not home that day?
Let’s impeach the president

For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected
Thank god he’s cracking down on steroids

Since he sold his old baseball team
There’s lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean
Thank God
