A Quote on Stocks
"October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February." - Mark Twain

Hillary the Favorite at this Second
I've had this conversation a few times with people and I am not sure people get it.
1. Hillary right now is the frontrunning favorite for President in 2008. This is not because she is going to win for sure, it is simply because she has some tremendous advantages and no one else has emerged. It's tantamount to predicting that the Yankees will win it all in 2010. We don't know how good anyone else is but we know that the Yankees will have a tremendous advantage.
2. Rove is right, Hillary will almost certainly win the nomination should she choose to go for it, but will have trouble in the general election. That is why, for example, an editorial in the Tampa Tribune implored her not to run. But she definitely has a chance which is why she is right that Rove is obsessed with her. . .
3. Look, it's far too early to say and who knows who'll step up? I think one thing that may very well happen is that the Republicans may actually appoint an heir apparent when/if Cheney steps down. . . Which when you think about it makes all the sense in the world. . . VP Guiliani? VP McCain? Who knows? But it offers a ton of advantages.
4. Despite all this though one fact remains: At this second, if you have to bet money on someone - anyone - Hillary is your odds on favorite. . .

A thousand apologies for my sporadic postings, I actually have a ton to say but have just been swamped lately with various things. Of course, there's a ton going on politically right now, with Bush's approval at an incredible low, Dems supposedly being favored on national security, the port issue with some calling for a review and yet others thinking the U.S. would be lucky to have Dubai run their ports. What's very interesting -- and I really want to write a post about this -- is that Bush is actually the one yelling racism and Hillary is opposed to the deal. Consider this from a Wash Po editorial, I couldn't agree more:
There are times when George Bush sorely disappoints. Just when you might expect him to issue a malapropian explanation, pander to his base or simply not have a clue about what he is talking about, he does something so right, so honest and, yes, so commendable, that -- as Arthur Miller put it in "Death of a Salesman" -- "attention must be paid." Pay attention to how he has refused to indulge anti-Arab sentiment over the Dubai ports deal.
And further:
Maybe because Bush is a Bush -- son of a president who got to know many Arabs -- or maybe because he just naturally recoils from prejudice, his initial stance on this controversy has been refreshingly admirable. Whatever the case, the president has done the right thing. Attention must be paid.
Interesting times, of course before you go thinking there's some sort of sea change going on out there, remember that many conservates will remain inveterate racists and though the Dems (chief among them Hillary) are being opportunistic about this that they still remain the greater force for good. Pat Buchanan may be sounding smarter and smarter lately but his position here is clear and Coulter, of course, delivers the vitriol and racism that we've come to expect from her. . .
Come congressmen senators please heed the call,
Don't stand in the doorway,
Don't block up the hall,

A Fact About Turin
I can't believe that I hadn't mentioned this:
Not in the NBC coverage
A fact worth noting about the gracious city of Turin: it is where Nietzsche wrote The Case of Wagner, The Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist, and Ecce Homo, and where he subsequently lost his mind. His last written utterance was a brief letter ending, "I just had all the anti-Semites shot."
It's important that history accurately remember Nietzsche for what he was: an anti-anti-Semite. All serious Nietzschean scholars understand this. He may (probably was) irresponsible but was far from the Nazi architect that he sometimes portrayed as, although he hung out with some shady characters there is no evidence that Nietzsche was anti-Semitic. . .
On a wholly separate note: Enjoy the Olympics!
I keep forgetting,

Sexy? Yes. Sexist? I don't think so either. . .
You've almost defintely seen this cover by now, but if you haven't, well: happy weekend! I don't buy this whole sexism angle and anyway I thought we were in the post-PC era. . . I like this one guy's explanation from Andrew Sullivan. . .
Happy weekend folks, I am going to endeavor to post more next week. . .

XM SIRIUS-LY BETTER
I must say I cannot see how Sirius can win this battle of satellite radios. XM is already kicking their asses and recently signed, the real Queen of All Media in Oprah for fraction of what Sirius paid for Stern. I think Stern was their last real big shot at catching up and I don't think that it's working. For me, XM is a no brainer. First they have MLB which may win it right there for them, but they also have the ACC so they get all my school's games (it's also probably the best hoops conference around), they get my school's coach, Coach K, they will soon have Bob Dylan hosting a show, they have the NHL and so much more!!
Really what they don't have is football and that's no biggie at all because I watch all Chiefs games either at home or at a bar or attend them in person. They don't have hoops, but who really listens to NBA on the radio?
In my mind and for my purposes there is no argument for Sirius and I think they might not even stick around considering the pressure from XM. . .
Under Pressure!

Gonzaga and Brokeback
BTW, have you seen this? It seems that the students are chanting "Brokeback Mountain" at opposing players at Gonzaga. The administration/faculty is none too happy about it. I don't get it though, if Gonzaga is a Catholic (Jesuit) school and the new Pope and the Vatican think that homosexuals are "objectively disordered" it shouldn't be that big a deal, right?
Just a thought.

Fairly interesting article about George W. and his post-Presidency plans. It's comforting to think that his Presidency is half over and that the peak of his Presidency is now gone. Soon he will be in our rearview mirrors and the healing can begin. . .

We've Got a Ways to Go. . .
Yesterday I posted a Coretta Scott King quote about the struggle for gay rights, this sad story out of Massachusetts says it all. The fight against bigotry and for equality is far from over. We'll get there someday, but we're not there yet. . .
You may say I'm a dreamer,

Even a Broken Clock. . .
Make no mistake about it, Pat Buchanan is a right wing fringe maniac. That said he often is dead balls on. Maybe because he's such a nut job anyway, he's not afraid to stand for unpopular, but deeply moral and correct things. This article entitled In Defense of Foreign Aid - for Hamas is one such example.
God, it’s such a drag when you’re livin’ in the past,
Baby, even the losers get lucky sometimes,
Even the losers keep a little bit of pride,
They get lucky sometimes,
Baby, even the losers get lucky sometimes,

The Life & Death of Coretta Scott King
We lost a great one in Coretta Scott King. She was more than just the wife of a great man. She was a voice for peace in her own right. Consider this little bit that I found on Sullivan:
"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people, and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people. Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood. This sets the stage for further repression and violence, that spreads all too easily to victimize the next minority group. Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, in Albany, Georgia, and St. Augustine, Florida, and many other campaigns of the civil rights movement. Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions." - Coretta Scott King, in 1999 at the 25th Anniversary luncheon for the Lambda Legal Defense Fund.

Bush, Alito and the Blue Devils
I don't really have much to say about the State of the Union, it was fairly unconsequential. I guess the big line was that we're addicted to oil which wasn't exactly the aptest of metaphors and according to one of Sullivan's readers it exposes his problems. Other than that it was particularly uneventful, honestly I thought the most interesting thing was the two new Justices in the front row. . . Speaking of whom, it appears that he has already split with the conservatives, not a big deal by any stretch but certainly ironic after all the headaches with the hearings. . . Duke barely pulled it out last night against BC, I still am not crazy about this "new" ACC, worst of all I can't stand the loss of the round robin. Everyone should play everyone at least once!
Have a nice day,
